We spy on Jackson as he shoots Gollum’s entrance into the film. The biggest issue, and one that will surely come up if the Lord of the Rings movies are ever remade, is finding someone - anyone - who can live up to his iconic performance. Initially, all we see of Serkis in the documentary is a manic blur wrestling Elijah Wood’s Frodo and Sean Astin’s Sam. But WETA visual effects animators and Serkis himself redid the character multiple times to get it. Serkis fought, bled, and crawled through freezing water to deliver the very best version of Gollum ever dedicated to the screen, and we’re eternally grateful for it. Actor Andy Serkis played Gollum in The Two Towers and Return of the King through motion capture. The talented mo-cap actor - whose skill extends far beyond character work - captured Gollum with utter perfection, redefining how viewers considered the once-background character. There’s simply no beating Andy Serkis’ incredible depiction of Gollum. Andy Serkis - Peter Jackson Trilogy Image via New Line Cinema Aside from playing Gandalf in the 'Lord of the Rings' films, the decorated actor previously played countless roles, including Magneto in several 'X-Men' films. Unfortunately, despite the film’s financial success, the animated release as a whole failed to deliver the entire Lord of the Rings story, and thus was considered an overall misfire among viewers. Gandalf, played by McKellen in both the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' trilogies, convinces Bilbo to help the dwarves on their quest to rescue their treasure. Gollum has an odd look to him in the 1978 animated take on The Lord of the Rings, sporting brownish skin and a generally goblin-esque appearance, but his portrayal is pretty solid. Peter Woodthorpe lent his voice to the part of Gollum in two separate endeavors - both the 1978 animated film adaptation and the 1981 BBC radio dramatization - and cemented himself as a vital part of the character’s history.
